‘You Can’t Lose(Until You Do) was written about my years at gigs in Aussie pubs and clubs watching people dump money into poker(slot) machines. It’s also reflective of the tall poppy syndrome and my introverted awe/disbelief that people can walk around so confident…winners....until they aren’t. Written on acoustic it didn’t find its feet until it had the weight of Geoff Green’s drum groove behind it and Paul Kerin’s guitar hook in the pre and chorus. When we were recording it it reminded us of slightly 90s Triple J Aussie guitar band vibes, think Jebediah. I like synths so there’s some layering happening in the chorus but I’m mostly a bass player so it’s always upfront. I was also chasing a freer bridge with some phased counter melodies. I hope you like it, you can’t lose, until you do.
